Squirrels are usually classified as a pest species due to their habits of living in houses. The most common complaints include the following:

Squirrels living in the attic
Squirrels living in the chimney
Squirrels chewing on woodwork
Squirrels stealing bird seed
Squirrels stuck inside the wall structures of homes

SQUIRREL BIOLOGY: A YEAR-ROUND PROBLEM

Eastern Grey squirrel adults average about 16 ounces in weight. They can supposedly live for up to ten years, but in the wild the life expectancy isn't more than 3-4 years. Squirrels produce about 2 litters per year which one is in the late summer, and one in the winter.
The female has a litter of 3-4 young after a 44 day gestation, and the young grow very quickly, and are weaned in about ten weeks.

SQUIRREL BEHAVIOR: THEY ARE CRAZY AND SNEAKY

Gray Squirrels are the most active in the morning and evening. Squirrels eat mostly nuts and seeds. They live in a variety of habitats, both forest and suburban or city areas. They establish home territories, and often communicate through chattering, scent, and flickering of their tail.

SQUIRRELS CAN BE A NUISANCE: AND EXPENSIVE DAMAGE

Gray Squirrels love to live in attics. They also love to chew, and will chew on houses or wires, ducts, pipes once inside an attic. People don't like the noises squirrels make running about above the ceiling or in the eaves, but its really the chewing that's the real problem. If squirrels chew on electrical wires in an attic, it can create a real potential fire hazard. Squirrels also bring in nesting material and leave urine and feces.

HOW WE GET RID OF YOUR SQUIRRELS: OVER 15 YEARS OF EASTERN GREY SQUIRREL EXCLUSION EXPERIENCE

If it's just squirrels on the property, the best way is trapping and removal. If its squirrels in the attic, then all of the open holes and vulnerable areas through which they can enter should be sealed shut with a material that squirrels can't chew through, such as steel. The squirrels can then be trapped and removed, or excluded through the use of one-way exclusion doors and tunnels. One ways are a combination of Impenetrable Hardware Guage and PVC. Cannot get back in.

ELIMINEX Provides a Free Attic Inspection for Squirrels and Mice (Steel Guage, Flashing, Ridge Vent, Reinforced Fiberglass Black All weather Foam, Copper Mesh, 19 Guage 1 x 2 Hardware Cloth, Silicone Sealant, etc. We use all the Best Pro Wildlife Supplies) **LIMITED COUNTIES ONLY**

SQUIRREL DAMAGE: STRUCTURAL AND CONTAMINATION

Eastern Grey Squirrels commonly enter houses either by chewing holes along the facia or in dormer corners, or by entering any existing gaps 1-2 inches in diameter. Once inside they may chew on electrical wiring or phone lines, displace or pack down and soil insulation, and make noise with their activities. The best way to rid squirrel problems is to first remove the problem squirrels by trapping and relocating and then patching holes to prevent further problems. Trimming any trees away from the house is also a good idea.

Squirrels occasionally damage lawns by burying or searching for and digging up nuts . They will chew bark and clip twigs on ornamental trees or shrubbery planted in yards. Often squirrels take food at bird feeders. Sometimes they chew to enlarge openings of bird houses and they enter to eat nestling songbirds. Flying squirrels are small enough to enter most bird houses and are especially likely to eat nesting birds.

It's mostly common sense.  You have to think of what rogue squirrels really are - intruders, criminals and disease carrying vermin.  As I try and project on my squirrel pages, you can think of these interlopers as "criminals of the squirrel sect."  Instead of 'doing what comes naturally,' they have invaded our personal domain.  And in addition to not paying any rent, they can do any one or all of the following: compromise our health and security by carrying diseases, soil our attics, walls or crawlspaces, and chew electric or alarm wiring.

I put it this way.  Would you catch an obvious and confirmed criminal in one town, and then just go and release him in another?  I think not.  (Or at least we TRY not to do this in our society.)  It's just as bad (maybe worse) that we do this with rogue squirrels.

Understandably, this is not all the fault of the squirrel....  Man, by the careless way we store and manage our trash, agricultural and food stores, merely INVITES the squirrel to dinner.  Sometimes it's actually dinner!  Many well-intention people actually FEED the squirrels, which only acclimates them to humans, bringing them in close proximity to your house.  As opposed to when you're in the woods, hunting squirrels in a wooded and non-residential area, squirrels HIDE from you, by cleverly staying out of both sight and range.  You can go through a setting like that without seeing a squirrel within a hundred yards.  Yet, they are as populous as they are around you.  Maybe even more so.  Definitely a challenging hunting target.  I know, I've done it.

The population of squirrels, increasing as they have, has forced them into places they normally would not go.  Couple this with the way houses "age," it creates a multitude of places the squirrels can use that are better than the hollow tree they get in the wild. They may look cute, but they can be as bad or worse than rats.

Since they are the ultimate scavenger, the so-called wolf in sheep's clothing, and are able to ‘leap tall buildings in a single bound,' they will cover virtually every square inch of the outdoor environment.  Those squirrels will investigate and discover any flaws that allow them to inspect the inside of your house.  And just as they do on the ground, in the attic they'll stay conveniently out of reach and they'll also stick around.  After that, the either oblivious and/or co-operating homeowners allow these invaders to breed inside, sending forth a regular bevy of naturally-made rogue squirrels into the neighborhood.  I've seen it happen hundreds of times.

If everyone left them alone, never fed them, (nor any wild animal) our squirrel problems would be minimal.  Naturally, there would still be invasions - this is the consummate suburban ‘predator' to our suburban home.

So while I understand the ‘compassion' that people feel for animals, and even the common habit of even ‘putting out the spiders' without killing them, we have to watch out that we don't turn our own innate human altruism into the assumption that animals have actual ‘human' qualities.  And certainly not these squirrels or the other animals that prefer to invade our buildings.

If you release him somewhere else, and that animal has any diseases, (and they all do) you have just moved those disease(s) that much further. You moved that animal much faster and further than Mother Nature would, and in the process, perhaps affecting other animals quicker, making for more carriers and vectors of diseases that can affect you and me, your children and your pets too. (Don't forget, after handling ANY animal wild, domestic or whatever, WASH YOUR HANDS with soap and water!)

Besides, if you DO let that squirrel go, you don't think he's going to stay in the woods/park/forest do you? Not for one New York Minute, he's not! He's going to head for another structure. He might even find his way back to YOUR place, you can't be sure unless you take him miles and miles, in a zig-zag pattern. Even then, squirrels sometimes find their way back. Kind of a tiresome ordeal if you have to relocate a half dozen squirrels or more. Especially since most of them will perish anyway, in a far worse way than you could probably devise.

And don't think "he'll be happy" because you took him to the woods/park/forest where there are lots of other squirrels.  Believe me when I tell you that ALL the squirrels will be unhappy.  There is no squirrel, including his own mother, that will welcome him. There's just no way in the world he's going to be able to establish his very own territory, so he's not going to stay where you dropped him.  He'll be chased out post haste, he'll just "head for the light" - someone's house - find some flaw, then find his way in, BINGO, instant squirrel problem.  (Even though I use the term "he," it is just as often, or even more so, that the females do this.)

One final thing.  If the Game Warden sees you, or if someone reports you translocating animal(s), there's a big fat fine for that.  That's ANY animal, dogs and cats included.

TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS
Make sure you retrieve all occupied traps quickly, don't let the animals hurt themselves by becoming too upset.  Whatever you do, do it quickly, you can't wait til you "get home from work" - this would be cruelty.  Take care of matters immediately, however you do it, do it quickly.
