Squirrels are usually classified as a pest species due to their habits of living in houses. The most common complaints include the following:

Squirrels living in the attic
Squirrels living in the chimney
Squirrels chewing on woodwork
Squirrels stealing bird seed
Squirrels stuck inside the wall structures of homes

SQUIRREL BIOLOGY: A YEAR-ROUND PROBLEM

Eastern Grey squirrel adults average about 16 ounces in weight. They can supposedly live for up to ten years, but in the wild the life expectancy isn't more than 3-4 years. Squirrels produce about 2 litters per year which one is in the late summer, and one in the winter.
The female has a litter of 3-4 young after a 44 day gestation, and the young grow very quickly, and are weaned in about ten weeks.

SQUIRREL BEHAVIOR: THEY ARE CRAZY AND SNEAKY

Gray Squirrels are the most active in the morning and evening. Squirrels eat mostly nuts and seeds. They live in a variety of habitats, both forest and suburban or city areas. They establish home territories, and often communicate through chattering, scent, and flickering of their tail.

SQUIRRELS CAN BE A NUISANCE: AND EXPENSIVE DAMAGE

Gray Squirrels love to live in attics. They also love to chew, and will chew on houses or wires, ducts, pipes once inside an attic. People don't like the noises squirrels make running about above the ceiling or in the eaves, but its really the chewing that's the real problem. If squirrels chew on electrical wires in an attic, it can create a real potential fire hazard. Squirrels also bring in nesting material and leave urine and feces.

HOW WE GET RID OF YOUR SQUIRRELS: OVER 15 YEARS OF EASTERN GREY SQUIRREL EXCLUSION EXPERIENCE

If it's just squirrels on the property, the best way is trapping and removal. If its squirrels in the attic, then all of the open holes and vulnerable areas through which they can enter should be sealed shut with a material that squirrels can't chew through, such as steel. The squirrels can then be trapped and removed, or excluded through the use of one-way exclusion doors and tunnels. One ways are a combination of Impenetrable Hardware Guage and PVC. Cannot get back in.

ELIMINEX Provides a Free Attic Inspection for Squirrels and Mice (Steel Guage, Flashing, Ridge Vent, Reinforced Fiberglass Black All weather Foam, Copper Mesh, 19 Guage 1 x 2 Hardware Cloth, Silicone Sealant, etc. We use all the Best Pro Wildlife Supplies) **LIMITED COUNTIES ONLY**

SQUIRREL DAMAGE: STRUCTURAL AND CONTAMINATION

Eastern Grey Squirrels commonly enter houses either by chewing holes along the facia or in dormer corners, or by entering any existing gaps 1-2 inches in diameter. Once inside they may chew on electrical wiring or phone lines, displace or pack down and soil insulation, and make noise with their activities. The best way to rid squirrel problems is to first remove the problem squirrels by trapping and relocating and then patching holes to prevent further problems. Trimming any trees away from the house is also a good idea.

Squirrels occasionally damage lawns by burying or searching for and digging up nuts . They will chew bark and clip twigs on ornamental trees or shrubbery planted in yards. Often squirrels take food at bird feeders. Sometimes they chew to enlarge openings of bird houses and they enter to eat nestling songbirds. Flying squirrels are small enough to enter most bird houses and are especially likely to eat nesting birds.

THEY CAME AND SET TRAPS IN THE ATTIC. AM WAITING FOR THEIR RETURN VISIT TO SEE WHAT THEY CAUGHT (IF ANYTHING). STILL HAVEN'T HEARD NOISE IN THE ATTIC AT NIGHT SINCE THE INITIAL VISIT IN 2014 ELIMINATED THE PROBLEM FOR A YEAR.
5stars  Customer since 2015
Had an inspection for raccoon damage and contamination in my attic.
I had been waiting for another company who never showed up. Eliminex was very informative on the phone, made arrangement to come next day. Operations Manager Derek and worker Robert arrived next day and were very professional. They did a complete inspection of attic, took pictures of damage and biohazard evidence of raccoon infestation. They were very careful to cover area under access door to attic n cleaned anything that dropped out of hatch. Derek gave me a full explanation of what work needed to be done and how they would do it and also how long the job would take. I was assured all insulation would be removed and a specialized vacuum used, decontamination and special treatment used to remove bad odors which can attract more raccoons.
I was extremely pleased with  the owner who arranged my next day inspection and staff who did inspection. Having retired as an EMS inspector for state health dept I was impressed.
5stars  Customer since 2015
I couldn't speak more highly about our experience with Eliminex. Some reviews said that the service was pricey, and frankly it is, but I've never had: an actual person from a company answer every call at any hour, answer all your questions, email a quote & contract, service people who show up when they say they will, start and finish a job, all with a pleasant attitude, professionalism and knowledge like this company. We had a family of raccoons in our attic and they set traps, checked them daily, removed the animals in a respectful manner, cleaned up, repaired the damages, and secured the house to prevent future issues. We are very satisfied customers!
Thank you Derek!!
5stars  Customer since 2015
The team was very professional and service was excellent. They walked me through the whole process and explained me all steps the team will take.
5stars  Customer since 2015
I found your company after having the AAA Pest Control not show for appointment, or return messages. I wish I had found you initially. Derek was prompt, and kept appointments....he even communicated via phone throughout the job. We are very satisfied with your service thus far, and hope to not need you again.
5stars  Customer since 2015
The team from Eliminex have been outstanding regarding the issues that have occurred at my residence. I know that that the process will take some time to complete but I feel very confident that the job will be completed in a professional manner.

Cleared out the critters in my attic and they have not returned.

Excellent service

Flying Squirrels are the “little squirrels of the night” here in New Jersey. These little squirrels are abundant. Yet because they only are active at night, most NJ folks have no idea they are around.  They are mainly in the homes from the middle of September to late May early June. Although, they will still go into houses in the summer months when bad summer rains and winds cause them to move in for a few days.   They are a small squirrel and are a very social squirrel.  A family group in the fall can range from 2 to 8 and in the winter numbers can range from 10 to 30 plus on any given night. They do not have the territory instincts as the Grey Squirrel and Red Pine Squirrels.  The average hole for a Flying Squirrel is around the size of a quarter to half dollar.  Many times we get calls in the middle of the night from customers telling us they have a baby squirrel running around the bed room. When I ask do they have big eyes and the answer is yes well it is not a baby squirrel, it’s a Flying Squirrel.  Because of their size the squirrels dropping are not much bigger than a large mouse dropping.   Many Pest Control and inexperienced Wildlife Operators will think the home has a bad mouse problem. Because the noise is always at night and the dropping size smaller than a Grey Squirrels.  When you call ELIMINEX WILDLIFE we will know many times if you have Flying Squirrels while we are asking questions and the answers you give while still on the phone. We offer two year warranties on Flying Squirrel jobs but most will not need our service again for many years to come.  Signs that Flying Squirrels are waking you up and not mice are a lot of noise at night for 2 to 4 nights in a row then nothing for a few nights. The noise sounds like marbles rolling around. High pitched chirps. The noise and activity is strongest during bad weather nights. Noise goes away for a day or 2 after you go into the attic to look around and can’t find anything.  Sounds like a “PARTY” in the attic!  Just a few of the things we hear from customers.

In New Jersey there are 2 species of Squirrels that cause problems for homeowners and properties. Everyone knows about the Grey Squirrel and the problems it causes entering homes and buildings, resulting in damage that cost thousands of dollars annually in NJ.  Yet there is another little squirrel that causes as much if not more problems for the NJ home and property owners, the Flying Squirrel. This “little squirrel of the night” is many times missed and thought to be mice by the pest controller, homeowners and less experienced wildlife control operators, because of the time of night the sounds are heard and the dropping size being close to mice droppings. Both the Grey Squirrel and the little Flying Squirrel are found throughout the whole state of NJ, and both can be found in the same home or building.

Raccoons on the roof tearing shingles off or ripping the gable vent out or even the attic fan is no match for this home evader.  In the late 80’s and early 90’s the Raccoon was very high on the list of wildlife problems for home owners and property owners in New Jersey. In 1992 the rabies outbreak came to the state and wiped the Raccoon population out.  For years the Raccoon has not been a problem to the homeowner but today the Raccoon has re-bound back to almost the numbers of the late 80’s and half of our calls seem to be Raccoon once again! There are two reasons Raccoons enter structures; first they are looking for something to eat.   Most people do not realize that the Raccoon is a predator.  The Raccoon preys on song birds and ground birds, if they can catch them, but the nest is the main focus.  Shore birds are at the mercy of the Raccoon.  Turtle nests fall to the Raccoon by astounding numbers.   The Raccoon also eats squirrels, by invading the nest in trees and has learned that young squirrels in attic nests are an easy meal.  Matter fact a large portion of our Raccoon jobs the Raccoon is there because the home has squirrels.  The Second reason is to live or sleep.  There are circuit dens and nursing dens. The male Raccoons (boars) and the females (sows) will have multiple dens to stay in.  Except a female that has young or has chosen a den to have young the coons will travel in their home circuit spending a day or two in each den then moving on to the next spot.  The sow with young or when she has chosen a den to have young will be there every day.  A lot of folks will think the Raccoon is gone and run up into the attic not see anything and close up the hole only to hear the Raccoon tearing the attic apart that night.   Or they will hear the Raccoon leave the home and will immediately close the hole only to have the Raccoon rip another hole in the roof a week later. (The Raccoon did it the first time why would it not do it again?) Many carpenters and roofer will just close the holes, the pest controller sets a trap in the attic however ELIMINEX WILDLIFE CONTROL SERVICES will not just close a hole, as a Professional control company we understand what it takes to solve the problem. Trapping and removing the coon and closing the entry point and animal proofing the home with a 2 year warranty is the only way to do the job right. Making sure the animal is out and closing right means years without problems!
Why not use a company that knows Raccoons and what to do to solve your problems!

New Jersey Fish and Wildlife is the authority for all wildlife in the State of NJ. The laws and policies are set by them on wildlife control.  Bats are protected in the state of NJ.  Bat control policy at this point, which has been issued by NJFW, states there can NOT be any bat exclusion and or seal up performed from May 1st to August 1st due to the fact that young bats may be in the structures at this time.  Young bats will not leave the structure till mid-July to August 1st. At which time a total and complete exclusion and seal job can be performed.
NOTE:  ELIMINEX will do an inspection of a customer’s home or building between May 1st and August 1stand then schedule job to be done after August 1st.

The thought of a Bat flying around the room in the middle of the night while you are sleeping is something that most folks here in New Jersey really do not want to experience. Yet this happens too many every year.  Matter of fact, most homes and structures have had Bats in the attics and walls without anyone ever knowing it!  There may not be more than one or two Bats going in, checking things out, and then leaving.  There are very few attics that we go into where we do not find a few Bat dropping scattered around. The Bat only needs an opening the size of a dime to a nickel: structures and homes all have what we call construction gaps. These gaps have nothing to do with the company who built your home or building.  There are areas where the roof decks will not meet the fascia, or the hips and valleys or the type of ridge vents used. Matter of fact the newer the home no matter who built the home the more openings there will be for bats to gain entry.  When we tell you a dime to nickel size, most homeowners cannot envision this.  Carpenters get mad and tell me they leave no opening, and in their minds, they do not! However, the fact is most people have no idea about what Bats are looking for and how hard a Bat will work to find these construction gaps.   There are nine species of Bats in NJ. Six of the Bats are here year round and three species part time in the summer. Yet only two species causes the problems living in structure for the most part the Big Brown and the Little Brown Bats. These Bats live in colonies and view your structure as a cool looking cave!  They choose to live in homes and structures. Most of the Little Browns head to the caves for the winter, along with many of the BIG BROWNS.   Although there is a large population of BIG BROWNS that will winter over in homes and structures here in NJ.  Over the past few years, I have heard pest control and animal control companies begin to call these Bats, Fruit Bats. NJ has no Fruit Bats living in our state. They are a tropic Bats for the most part. This term is use to make people feel good about Bats.
My background in doing carpentry and roof work along with the understanding of the habitats and behaviors of the Bats allows me to do the work and solve the Bat problems, where many may struggle.
We have learned about the nursing periods (mid May to mid July young are not flying and in the home) and the habits of the Bats. Much of what was learned and from others around the country that were doing the same thing.  Research that was being done in the early 1990’s was based off what we were doing.   Today the work and know how that  others and myself gained back then has created a real life system on how to do Bat work the proper way.  Bat nets, valves, one way doors and other methods that do not catch, but allows the Bats to leave the structure is the preferred methods to get the Bats out of the structure.  Sealing the whole structure placing the exclusion devices and then removing the devices and sealing those areas will keep the Bats out for long periods.  The key to Bat work is doing it right and finding all the openings.  Sad to say many of today’s pest control and newer companies do not have the experience to perform this the right way.  Finding a hole and putting a tube over it may keep the Bats from using that hole again but the Bats will find the hole 2 feet down the roofline.   We have found that Bats will try to re-enter the structure for 2 to 3 years after.
Eliminex is not a hard sell, high-pitched company that is going to force you to do Bat work.  We tell you what you have, and what you need to do. If you want us to do the job, we will

Fleas and their control NJ

Among the more than 2,200 types of fleas identified by entomologists over the years, none is more problematic, at least to cats and their owners, than a minute creature called Ctenocephalides felis felis. These little critters, commonly referred to as “cat fleas,” are almost imperceptibly small, ranging in size from that of a pinhead to about one-eighth of an inch in length.
In order to thrive and propagate, cat fleas need to dwell in a warm, moist, and safe environment, and these will be provided by a cat’s dense, furry coat. The consequences of flea infestation will be terribly uncomfortable for most affected cats and can be the source of deadly disease for some. At the least, flea bites are apt to cause insufferable itching, but a hypersensitive cat’s incessant scratching may open wounds in the skin that are vulnerable to serious infection.
Indeed, these tiny, wingless creatures often carry infectious agents themselves, such astapeworm eggs and a variety of pernicious bacteria—including the organism that causes feline infectious anemia—which can be passed among cats that are in close physical contact. The risk that cat fleas pose to humans is also consequential, since these tiny insects can harbor such zoonotic agents as those that cause such human diseases as cat-scratch disease (Bartonella henselae), murine typhus, and plague.
A flea’s life cycle typically lasts about a month, but it can go on for longer than that, depending on temperature and humidity. During the cycle, the insect moves through a complete metamorphosis—from egg to larva to pupa to adult—and is most dangerous in the larval and adult stages. “Under ideal conditions,” says William Miller Jr., VMD, a professor of dermatology at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, “one mating female will lay at least 20 eggs a day, half of which hatch as females. This can eventually produce about 20,000 new adult fleas in 60 days.”
All cats—regardless of age, breed, or gender—are subject to flea infestation and its consequences. According to Dr. Miller, they tend to be bitten mostly on the back of the neck and the top of the tail head. Cats with flea allergy dermatitis are apt to show especially distressful signs—reddish, crusty bumps, for example—even in areas that have not been obsessively scratched.
Flea infestation can pose a special danger to kittens, Dr. Miller adds. “A flea doesn’t actually bite,” he points out. “It sticks its proboscis into the skin and sucks blood. It doesn’t take too much of this sucking to cause anemia in a kitten that is carrying innumerable fleas.”
To counter flea infestation, Dr. Miller points out, you must, of course, rid the cat of the insects. However, you must also get them out of your home and off of your property—an effort that will certainly entail meticulous vacuuming of all furniture, rugs, and carpeting, a chore that may require the services of a professional exterminator.
“To treat the animal,” says Dr. Miller, “some very effective products have been developed in recent years—a wide variety of powders, topical antiflea products that are applied directly onto an infested animal’s fur and sort of wrap the animal in an insecticide, and medications containing flea preventives that circulate in the blood.” These products—whether sold over-the-counter or by prescription—may containchemicals that are potentially harmful to an animal or its owner if misapplied or accidentally ingested and should be used only with the advice and guidance of a veterinarian. According to Dr. Miller, if you use one of these products faithfully—beginning in the spring of the year and going into the fall before colder weather sets in, your cat is very likely to remain free of fleas.
At the same time, he points out, owners who treat their animals with an effective antiflea product but neglect to prevent recurring infestation in the environment will never resolve the flea problem. “Skunks, raccoons, and other wildlife will seed your backyard with fleas,” he says. “Your animal brings one or two of them inside, and suddenly you’ll have thousands of fleas.”

Flea Allergy

In its relatively brief time on earth (typically ranging from a few weeks to a year or so), the teeny, brown wingless cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis felis) asks little from life. All it wants are a few basics—a comfortable place to live, adequate nourishment, and a hospitable environment in which to raise a family. The warm, moist, furry hide of a cat can provide all of these amenities—and that’s why fleas, if given the opportunity, will swiftly hop on an unwary animal’s back and take up residence there.
Living in such comfortable surroundings may be just fine for the flea, but the situation can cause no end of itchy torment for its host—especially to a cat that happens to be allergic to flea saliva, which the little insects deposit in their hosts’ skin when they bite. And they do have a tendency to bite.
“An allergy,” explains William Miller Jr., a professor of dermatology at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, “is an exaggerated response to a stimulus, and this overreaction can manifest itself in an animal’s skin. All cats can be affected to some extent by flea bites, but an allergic cat will react with disproportionate severity. Where it would take dozens of flea bites to significantly harm a normal cat’s skin, the same amount of damage to the skin of an allergic will result from just a few bites.”
This hypersensitivity, Dr. Miller points out, is a physiologic aberration whereby a cat’s immune system mistakenly recognizes a nontoxic foreign substance that has entered its body as harmful. In an effort to combat the substance—called an allergen—the animal’s immune system releases a chemical compound called histamine. The itching that characteristically signals the presence of a flea bite allergy is caused by the eruption of small, pale, fluid-filled lumps on the skin, which form in response to the allergen’s presence.
According to Dr. Miller, cats tend to be bitten mostly on the back of the neck and the top of the tail head. “Cats are grooming animals,” he points out, “and the fleas quickly figure out that a cat can’t get at those areas. So the cat starts scratching, and because cats have very sharp claws, they can get very severe skin lesions very quickly.” However, he adds, cats with flea allergy dermatitis are apt to show distressful signs—reddish, crusty bumps, for example—even in areas that have not been savagely scratched as well as those that are obviously itching. The lower back, thighs, abdomen, head, and neck are among the areas most commonly affected. As aggravating as the itchy welts may be, Dr. Miller notes, they do not, in themselves, pose a serious health problem. But the incessant scratching that they prompt may cause secondary skin wounds and, consequently, vulnerability to severe bacterial infections.
Obsessive scratching is the clearest indication that a cat is infested with fleas—especially if the weather is warm and muggy. On close inspection, the insects can be seen with the naked eye, usually on the animal’s belly, back, or near the tail. Fleas may also be detected by having the animal stand on a large piece of damp white paper or a pillowcase and running a fine-toothed comb through its coat. The fleas, along with small black specks (their feces) will be visible on the white background.
Suspected infestation can be readily confirmed by means of veterinary diagnosis involving the animal’s medical history, a physical examination, and possible skin testing. If a definitive diagnosis of flea allergy is established, the veterinarian may prescribe any of several available systemic medications, such as: an antibiotic (a substance that can inhibit or destroy the growth of invasive microorganisms); a corticosteroid (a hormone often used to moderate an immune response and reduce inflammation); or an antihistamine (which inhibits the action of the chemical agent whose production causes the release of fluids into the tissues of an affected cat that can lead to inflammation and itching). No such medications, of course, should ever be used without the specific recommendation of a veterinarian.
At the same time, Dr. Miller advises, measures must be taken to remove all fleas from a vulnerable cat’s environment. “You have to treat the animal,” he notes, “and you also have to protect against flea infestation in its environment.” Your veterinarian can help you choose the best topical and/or oral flea medications for your cat, and offer advice on how to treat the environment.

Lyme Disease: A Potential, But Unlikely, Problem for Cats

Lyme disease is probably not a concern for cat owners. Although the bacteria that cause Lyme disease is capable of infecting cats, the disease has never been seen in a cat outside of a laboratory setting. However, because Lyme is potentially quite severe and is common among humans and dogs, it is wise to know how the disease is transmitted and what the signs of infection are in your pets.
Named for the Connecticut town where it was first identified in 1975, Lyme disease is a potentially lethal infection. Without prompt treatment, in humans and dogs this bacterial infection can progress to extensive joint damage, deadly cardiac complications, kidneyfailure, and neurologic dysfunction. Although the disease is most frequently diagnosed in the northeastern U.S., it has been reported in humans in all 48 contiguous states.
According to William Miller Jr., VMD, a professor of Dermatology at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Lyme disease is caused by a spiral-shaped bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi, which enters an animal’s system via the bite of a young tick(nymph) or an adult female tick. In the northern, midwestern, and southern areas of the nation, infection is transmitted primarily by the black-legged tick, otherwise known as the deer tick. On the West Coast, the bacterium is generally carried by a similar parasite, the Western black-legged tick.
With the arrival of warm weather in the spring, mature ticks—which have been dormant during the colder months-- become active again and resume their quest for blood meals, which, females need for the completion of the life cycle (mating and laying eggs). And as they feed this time, the parasites can infect their new hosts with the dangerous bacteria that they have harbored since their larval stage.
Ticks do not hop like fleas, notes Dr. Miller. Rather, they crawl, perching on the tops of grasses and other vegetation, awaiting the approach of a host, sensing its arrival by the vibrations of a footfall or a sudden rise in temperature caused by the potential victim’s body heat. Immediately after a tick attaches itself to its host, the bacteria begin to reproduce in the area surrounding the bite. Soon afterward, the pathogens move into the bloodstream, and the early signs of Lyme disease will usually become evident within four weeks of infection: fever, lethargy, diminished appetite, and apparently painful stiffness and swelling in the muscles and joints.
Immediate veterinary consultation is warranted, Dr. Miller advises, if any of these signs are observed in your cat during tick season. Lyme disease can be diagnosed through a variety of laboratory tests, including sophisticated blood analyses, with treatment usually involving the use of an antibiotic. Studies in the laboratory setting show that cats that are treated promptly have a very good chance of full recovery. If treatment is delayed, relief may take considerably longer and may require prolonged veterinary care. An infection that remains untreated for an extended period—several weeks or so—can result in irreversible tissue damage.
Although a vaccine is available to protect dogs against Lyme disease, no such vaccine has been developed for cats. However, a cat can be protected to an extent during warm weather by using a cat-safe insect repellent before it goes outdoors. Consult your veterinarian for safe products to use since cats are extremely sensitive to many insecticides, including some all-natural products and products that are marketed for dogs. The cat’s coat should be brushed and thoroughly examined for ticks when it comes back inside. If a tick is spotted, it should be removed, using forceps or tweezers that reach beneath the parasite’s body and grab it close to where the tick is attached to the skin. Studies have shown that infected deer ticks begin transmitting Lyme disease after the tick has been attached for 36-48 hours, so the possibility of Lyme disease transmission can be greatly reduced by examining cats daily and removing ticks within the first 48 hours. Ticks can transmit diseases to humans, so anyone removing a tick should wear gloves, avoid touching the tick with bare hands, and wash their hands after disposing of the tick in a jar of alcohol.
